On 23 February, Friends of the Hauraki Gulf chair Mike Lee was invited to Zoom meeting with Ngaitai ki Tāmaki Rangatira James Brown and Laurie Beamish to outline our proposal. ![]() The Kaipātiki resolution reads in part, “ request consideration for the reserve boundaries to be extended, particularly to the eastern coast of Motutapu, and be aligned with geographical features such as natural headlands as shown in the tabled map…to facilitate easy identification for boat users and coastal fishers, and to include more coastline and hence protect more coastal ecology.”Īward-winning author and former Waiheke resident Janet Hunt has submitted in support of the Hākaimangō-Matiatia Marine Reserve - as have a number of prominent academics in fthe fields of geography, ecology and marine biology. Other local boards in the Hauraki Gulf area to offer formal support are Hibiscus and Bays, Kaipātiki (who say the reserve should be way bigger), Orākei, Whau, Henderson. The Waiheke Local Board resolved last week to formally support the marine reserve proposal. Leith Duncan, Mike Lee (FoHG) Paul Walden (Waiheke Local Board) Danella Roebeck (Co-Chair Ngāti Paoa Trust Board),Ĭhris Curreen, Sid Marsh Photo David Roebeck. “It is for all the above reasons that Ng ā ti Paoa will walk alongside FoHG in support of the application to establish the Hākaimangō-Matiatia Marine Reserve, and that the mana of Ng ā ti Paoa Iwi/hapu support will help to make our joint aspirations a reality.” In a letter to the Friends, the Board writes, ‘Ngāti Paoa are driven by principles of kaitiakitanga (environment responsibility), manaakitanga (capability building), and taonga tuku iho mō ngā uri whakatipu (guardianship of resources for future generations).’ The Trust Board is formally backing the reserve and has advised Auckland Council/Waiheke Local Board accordingly. On Sunday 20 February, the Friends joined with the co-chair Danella Roebeck and principal officer David Roebeck of the Ngāti Paoa Trust Board for a walk along the coastline of the proposed marine reserve followed by a meeting Owhanake Bay, an area of historical significance for Ngāti Paoa.
